latitudes and longitudes

“Nothing makes the earth seem so spacious as to have friends at a distance; they make the latitudes and longitudes.” ~Henry David Thoreau

I’ve always really liked this quote. It’s no doubt that there’s a big and expansive world out there, full of mysterious corners, foreign languages and massive stretches of space where it feels like you can almost touch the sky, it’s so broad. But I’ve always measured distance, especially in my adult life, by the space that builds between friends and family. Whether it’s a handful of miles and the tangled mess of life that separates us down the road from each other, or thousands of steps and a lightning fast internet connection that bonds us together, my world is filled with the latitudes and longitudes that Thoreau so keenly observes.

Just feeling the effects of space, time, distance and life today. And hopeful that some of the goodbyes that I seem to be saying more often lately turn back into “hellos” soon.

“Don't be dismayed at goodbyes. A farewell is necessary before you can meet again. And meeting again, after moments or lifetime, is certain for those who are friends.” ~Richard Bach
